How often do you change your passwords? If you believe your password has been compromised, certainly you should change it. Here at Mainstream, our password policy requires everybody changes their passwords on a quarterly basis.
When you do make a change, make sure the new password is unrelated to your old one and that it meets a certain level of complexity. A good strong password is considered to be at least 12 or 13 characters long and includes three of the four groups of characters found on the keyboard; numerals, lower case characters, upper case characters, and punctuation.
Another alternative to a strong password is to consider using a passphrase. A passphrase may be longer, 20-30 character, but since it’s a phrase (out of a book, a song or even the dictionary, it’s often easier to remember.
A side note: Never use the same password for more than one account or ever share it with anyone!
